Humility = Strength
/Numbers 12:1-3 'Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite. “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?” And the Lord heard this. (Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)'
One of our core values at LGC is humility. And humility, rather than being weakness as it may be viewed by many, is a gateway to power and to becoming an overcomer. When Moses was faced with a threat to his character, position and identity, the Holy Spirit takes pains to paint the character of Moses - 'the most humble man on earth'. What enabled this position of rest for Moses was that little sentence: 'The Lord heard this'.
There is no record of Moses defending himself. Maybe this is because he knew that his Lord heard every word spoken against him, and he knew that God would be his protector and vindicator. He did not have to fight false accusations, nor defend his reputation. He had to be right before God, not before people.
The Devil seeks to gain influence over us by manipulating our flesh, our old self with its selfish desires. If he can focus us on our hurt pride, our self-centred need to defend ourselves, he renders us powerless in bringing Kingdom atmosphere into our environment. We see the faults in people rather than the need which is causing theirbehaviour.
But humility robs the devil of the power to hurt us, because there is no pride for him to manipulate. We simply do not give him the resources to mess with us. It enables us to keep loving even when we are being mistreated. This enabled Moses to demonstrate the heart of Jesus Christ, to bless even those who had persecuted him:
Numbers 12:10-13: 'When the cloud lifted from above the tent, Miriam’s skin was leprous — it became as white as snow. Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had a defiling skin disease, and he said to Moses, “Please, my lord, I ask you not to hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed. Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother’s womb with its flesh half eaten away.” So Moses cried out to the Lord, “Please, God, heal her!”'
Where He could have told Aaron and Miriam to clear off, or felt justified in himself, saying they deserved all they had got, he was able to bless.
God make me more humble! Any part of me that lacks humility becomes a natural target for the enemy. I want to be strong to love, having the grace to bless when others would curse.
Impossible?
Not with humility.
